JUST about all sangomas use animal bones to help them find out what is troubling their patients.
Some have appeared in Daily Sun using monkey paws to bring good luck . . .
But sangoma Letlhogonolo Pitso (45) is the only one known to have a monkey as his spiritual guide.
Pitso, who has been a sangoma for 23 years, said he was instructed in a dream two years ago to get a monkey that would guide him spiritually.
The sangoma, from Ipelegeng kasi outside Schweizer-Reneke in North West, said that at first he ignored the instructions – but soon his ancestors expressed their anger!
Then one day he found a monkey at his nearby cattle kraal – and the two became best friends.
He named the monkey Ponkie.
He said ever since they started working together, his indumba had reached another level. He said clever Ponkie is able to read the bones, predict trouble and protect patients from danger.
“Ponkie can predict who is coming for consultation. When a person enters the indumba I already know the problems they are facing. Ponkie will jump and choose muthi for the patient,” Pitso claimed.
Pitso said he had loved animals long before becoming a sangoma and he often has dreams about them.
Ponkie, who loves pap and fruit, has his own cage where he sleeps.
Pitso said the two of them played whenever time allowed.
The sangoma is also a Christian and a bishop of his church.
“I believe that being a sangoma is a gift from God that was given through my ancestors,” said Pitso.
He said he knew that he had to own Ponkie legally, even though the monkey was a gift from his ancestors.
“I have applied to the SPCA to own the monkey. I am waiting for their permission,” said Pitso
One of Pitso’s patients, Mapule Mothupi (22) said: “Sangoma Pitso’s monkey is not like other monkeys – it has a special gift.
It helped me to heal after I had suffered from a sickness for about 16 years. This was after I consulted doctors and other sangomas with no luck.”
